Professional racer internship8/28/2023 ![]() Color of tires on a dirt car as the car moves into and through the corners is something that the driver often cannot see or is too busy to see. There are things that the driver does not see while on track. Observations made from outside the driver's compartment are a key input in addition to driver debrief. ![]() Included in this activity is a driver debrief and the input from the crews on track observations. In today's world, there is no real excuse to not keep detailed notes. All of the notes from the driver debrief and observations of the crew need to be documented. The keeping of notes pertaining to the car setup and then biasing that against lap times and driver feedback is a key difference. There is a "no adjustment is too big to make" attitude in the crew. The only exception for a lack of attention may be the engine and some engine related components, but for the most part the engine received very little or no attention over the course of a race, possibly a check of fluid levels. ![]() The car is also cleaned as part of the regular maintenance process. Nothing is immune to measurement or change during the course of an event, nothing. As the track changes the car is adjusted. Sometimes big adjustments are made not just small adjustments like the preload on the bars. Notes are taken and measurements recorded, not at the end of the night but between heats and mains all adjustments are recorded. There is a willingness to take the car apart and make any perceived necessary change or changes to the cars setup. Nose wings are set to precise angles, (in fact many teams have tools that are specifically for adjusting front wings), and checked or adjusted through the night. Springs are checked, either a coil spring or a torsion bar. ![]() The cars are weighed sometimes several times through the event. Tires are measured constantly, prior to the race, after practice and after the race. First there is a relentless, almost rabid dedication to measurement and following a prescribed process for working on the car. If you go to a WOO show, either the Sprints or the Late Models and watch the teams work in the pits you will see some striking differences. ![]()
